A Beginner's Guide to Choosing the Right Hair System
Share
Are you considering a hair system to regain your confidence and achieve a natural look? With so many options available, choosing the right hair system can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the world of hair replacement. Don’t worry—we’re here to help! This guide will walk you through the key factors to consider when selecting the perfect hair system for your needs.
1. Understand Your Hair Loss Pattern
The first step in choosing a hair system is understanding your hair loss pattern. Hair loss can vary greatly from one person to another, and identifying your specific pattern will help you select a system that offers the best coverage and natural appearance.
- Receding Hairline: If you have a receding hairline, you might only need a frontal hair system.
- Thinning on Top: For thinning on the crown or top of your head, a partial hair system or topper can add the necessary volume.
- Full Hair Loss: If you have extensive hair loss, a full-cap hair system will provide complete coverage.
2. Choose the Right Base Material
The base material of a hair system affects its comfort, durability, and appearance. Your location, lifestyle and other specific needs should be taken into account the most with the base type you select.
The most common types are:
- Lace: Lightweight and breathable, lace bases are ideal for hot climates and active lifestyles. They offer a natural look, especially along the hairline.
- Polyurethane (Poly): Poly bases mimic the appearance of the scalp and are easy to clean. They are more durable but can be less breathable than lace.
- Monofilament (Mono): These bases combine the benefits of lace and poly, offering a natural look with good durability and comfort.
3. Decide on Hair Type and Quality
The quality of the hair used in the system significantly impacts its appearance and longevity. You can choose between synthetic and human hair:
- Synthetic Hair: More affordable and easier to maintain, synthetic hair retains its style even after washing. However, it may not look as natural as human hair and can be sensitive to heat. If you require grey hair in your system, it will be synthetic, so keep this in mind.
- Human Hair: Offers the most natural look and feel. Human hair systems can be styled and coloured just like your natural hair. They are more expensive and require more maintenance.
With the increase in Production in hair replacement systems, it is now more affordable to use human hair over synthetic hair. spend the little bit extra and get a system with human hair - you can thank us later!
4. Consider the Hair Density
Hair density refers to the amount of hair on the system base. The right density should match your natural hair for a seamless blend:
- Light Density (90-100%): Suitable for those with naturally thin hair or older individuals.
- Medium Density (100-120%): Ideal for most men and provides a natural look.
- Heavy Density (130%+): Best for those with thick, voluminous hair.
Always remember to check the density before purchasing you Hair replacement system. Try get opinions from family, friends or your barber/stylist, on what others see as you can tend to have the blinders on when it comes to your own appearance. I have personally see too many incorrectly matched hair systems that could be solved by having the right density.
5. Select the Hair Colour and Texture
Matching the hair system to your natural hair colour and texture ensures a cohesive and undetectable look. Many suppliers, like us, offer colour-matching services, or you can use a sample of your natural hair for the best match.
- Hair Colour: Choose a colour that closely matches your natural shade or opt for a slightly lighter tone to blend seamlessly.
- Hair Texture: Match the texture (straight, wavy, curly) to your natural hair for consistency.
As mentioned with hair density, for a natural appearance, get opinions and a proper colour match before committing to your system. The second biggest give away is the super dark brown on greying bio hair.
6. Evaluate Attachment Methods
The attachment method you choose affects the ease of use and comfort. Common methods include:
- Tape: Easy to apply and remove, ideal for daily wear and warmer climates due to the ease of re-applying.
- Liquid Adhesive: Offers a secure bond for extended wear, but can be messier to apply.
- Clips: Non-permanent and more suited to longer hair, but may not be suitable for very active lifestyles.
Personally, I alternate between liquid (full head bond) and tape (partial bond) depending on the season and what I am doing that fortnight. Liquid is great for long, secure holds and an easy clean up. although is rather hard to attach solo. whereas tape is super easy to attach and maintain, say on holidays when you need to tidy the hairline up before a dinner out.
7. Seek Professional Advice
Finally, consulting with a hair system professional can provide personalised recommendations and ensure you choose a system that meets your specific needs. Many professionals or suppliers offer virtual consultations, making it convenient to get expert advice from the comfort of your home.
